17. December – Advent Calendar

Christmas Traditions in English Speaking Countries

Christmas Crackers

Christmas Dinner on 25 December is usually accompanied by another tradition - Christmas Crackers. They contain a small toy, a paper hat and a saying. Cristmas Crackers were invented in the 19th century by a confectioner who sold sweets in them.

When everybody is sitting around the table for Christmas dinner, it’s time to open the crackers. Hold your own cracker in your right hand and cross your arms in front of your body. With your left hand, take one end of your right neighbours cracker. Then pull the crackers, so that they open with a bang.
