Stockings

Before going to bed on Christmas Eve, children hang up a stocking at the end of their beds or at the mantelpiece. When the children wake up the next morning, the stockings are filled with sweets.

Legend has it that Santa once lost some gold coins when coming through the chimney. Fortunately some stockings were up there for drying – the coins fell into one of them. The owner of the stockings was very happy, and when the story got about, others also started to hang up stockings on Christmas Eve.
