Especially in the USA, outdoor Christmas decoration is very popular. People want to show their neighbours how they are looking forward to Christmas, so they decorate the whole house. In some neighbourhoods there are even competitions on whose house is most beautifully decorated. Light chains everywhere in and around the house, on trees; illuminated reindeer, sleighs etc. in the garden light the night up festively (and cost a lot of electricity and money).
