Olympic Summer Games

The first Olympic Summer Games of modern times took place in Athens in 1896. In 2004 the Games returned to the place of their origin.

According to the Olympic Charter, there must be a minimum of 15 Olympic sports on the programme. Due to the growth of the Olympics, the programme of the Summer Games is limited to a maximum of 28 sports, 301 events and 10,500 athletes. The IOC can add new sports and strike out others – baseball and softball for example will not anymore be on the programme of the Olympic Summer Games in 2012.
